Vol. 98 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Workers' Holidays.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the fact that, by agreement between the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union and various employers, many thousands of workers are, or will soon become entitled to a fortnight's annual leave with pay, he will amend the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1939, so as to allow such a period of annual leave to all workers, including agricultural workers and others not already entitled to annual holidays with pay.

Under the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1939, and the Shops (Conditions of Employment) Act, 1938, certain classes of workers, such as domestic workers and other workers who are employed on public holidays, have a statutory right to a fortnight's annual holidays with pay. Under the Holidays (Employees) Act, 1939, other classes of workers to whom this Act relates are entitled to a minimum period of seven consecutive whole holidays in each full employment year and six public holidays with pay. It is not proposed to alter the statutory obligations on employers in this respect.
