Vol. 98 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages in Irish.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is prepared to introduce legislation whereby all births, deaths and marriages will be compulsorily registered in Irish.

No such proposals are under consideration. There is every facility under existing arrangements for the registration of births, deaths and marriages in Irish. I may add that there are under consideration proposals for legislation to facilitate the registration in Irish of names of persons registered in English who desire to have their names registered in Irish.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that a resolution was passed in Dáil Éireann, some 20 years ago, dealing with the subject of my question and could he explain why the terms of that resolution were never put into effect?

I have to confess that I am not familiar with the terms of that resolution.
