Vol. 98 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remuneration of Departmental Temporary Staff.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the average pay received by the temporary staff at Ballsbridge; why they are not allowed a cost-of-living bonus and war bonus as other civil servants; and, further, if he is prepared to consider their case with a view to granting them a bonus.

It is assumed that the Deputy's question refers to the temporary staff employed by the Department of Industry and Commerce at Ballsbridge. The following classes of temporary staff are employed in that Department at Ballsbridge: temporary male clerks, temporary female clerical assistants, temporary inspectors, temporary professional accountants. Temporary female clerical assistants and temporary male clerks receive both cost-of-living bonus and emergency bonus, in addition to basic pay. The total remuneration of female temporary clerical assistants at present is 48/11 (unmarried) and 50/11 (widows) per week. The total remuneration of temporary male clerks after one year's service is 79/11 (unmarried) and 81/11 (married) per week. The temporary inspectors and temporary professional accountants, who receive inclusive salaries, are also paid, in accordance with the general practice, emergency bonus, if their total remuneration is less than £500 per year.

The position is, therefore, that all but a few of the temporary staff employed at Ballsbridge are at present in receipt of cost-of-living bonus and emergency bonus and the remainder receive emergency bonus unless their remuneration amounts to £500 a year or over. In the circumstances, no further action appears to be necessary.

In view of the different grades of temporary staff employed, and their varying duties, no useful purpose would appear to be served by calculating the average pay of the temporary staff in question.
