Vol. 98 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in County Dublin.

Mr. P. Burke

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a number of rivers in North County Dublin are responsible for the flooding of large tracts of land in the Ballough, Garristown, Balbriggan, Portmarnock, Lissenhall, Newbridge, Ballynadrough, etc., areas; and, if so, if he will state if his Department has received any proposals in connection with the drainage of these areas; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

The Minister has received representations under the Rural Improvements Scheme in respect of one watercourse in Jordanstown, Ballystrane, Oberstown, Ballough, Newtowncorduff, Corduff Hall, Cold-winters and Newhaggard. The drainage of this area would be a comparatively large work, and it is doubtful if it could be brought within the scope of the Rural Improvements Scheme, which is intended to cover only drainage works of a minor character. The matter is at present under consideration, and I shall inform the Deputy of the result in due course.

Could any pressure be brought to bear on the local authorities in order to remedy the flooding in these areas? Would they have any authority?

Not as far as I know.
