Vol. 98 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Labourers' Cottages (Wexford).

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether, following recent reports supplied to him, he will now state the number of labourers' cottages in Wexford on which (a) inspection has been carried out; (b) repairs recommended; (c) repair work commenced, and (d) repair work completed.

Between 1st April, 1945, and 31st October, 1945, a total of 1574 labourers' cottages in the Wexford county health district were inspected by the rent collection and engineering staffs of the county council. Repairs were recommended in 639 cases. Work was commenced in 490 cases and had, at 31st October, been completed in 474 cases.

Is the Minister aware that some of these rent collectors never go near the cottages at all to collect the rent and that the rent must be left for them in a certain place? Will he see that that practice ceases, because great hardship is imposed by allowing rents to run which are supposed to be collected weekly?

Why does the Deputy not see that the county manager does his job and gets the rents collected?

I have done that on several occasions.
