Vol. 99 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding at New Ross.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the flooding by the River Barrow at New Ross is causing serious concern; and if he will take the necessary steps to have the breaches in the banks of the river, north and south of the town, repaired as soon as possible.

A considerable time must elapse before it will be possible to undertake any works on the lower reaches of the River Barrow pursuant to the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945.

Mr. Corish

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply: having regard to the fact that something like 200 acres of agricultural land are now laid waste there by reason of flooding, would he consider referring the matter to the Minister for Agriculture; and having regard to the fact that the condition of these 200 acres around the town of New Ross, when the floods recede, is likely to be very bad, would he also consider referring the matter to the Minister for Local Government and Public Health?

I should like the Deputy to know that there are about 2,000 acres of very good land affected by flooding all around the country, as well as in the town of New Ross.
