Vol. 99 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Irish Glassware.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that all the tumblers and other glassware used by Córas Iompair Éireann in their restaurants are of foreign origin, although similar articles of Irish manufacture are obtainable; and whether he will take steps to ensure that this State-guaranteed concern shall use only Irish glassware, especially in view of the fact that, while foreign glassware is permitted entry into this country, the products of the Irish Glass Company are not allowed to be sold on the English market.

If it should be deemed desirable, at any time, to take action to encourage the purchase of home-produced domestic glassware in preference to imported glassware, such action will be of general application, and not confined to one firm. It is not proposed to place Córas Iompair Éireann in any different position in this respect to other firms operating here.

I understand that imported glassware is at present in use by Córas Iompair Éireann in its restaurants. These goods were purchased in a competitive market, and I do not consider that any action on my part is required.

Does the Parliamentary Secretary not consider it a very bad example to have a State-controlled institution supporting foreign manufacture to the detriment of Irish industry?
