Vol. 100 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Societies' Interest Charges.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the present rates of interest charged by building societies for house purchase loans range from 5 to 6 per cent.; and whether, in view of the excessive rates of interest charged, he will introduce appropriate legislation to deal with the position.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the affirmative. It is to be assumed that the rates of interest charged are related to the rates allowed on deposits. It is not proposed to introduce legislation in this connection.
