Vol. 100 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strike on Minor Employment Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that a serious strike has existed for the past five weeks on a Minor Employment Scheme in Fermoy, County Cork; that this strike came about because the workers employed on the scheme refused to work unless they were paid weekly, as they are unable to obtain credit over a long period; that under the present system of payment the men may have to work for four weeks before they receive any payment; and whether he will state if he is prepared to make arrangements to have these men constantly employed and paid weekly during the operation of the scheme.

I have no power to instruct county councils in this matter. The matter has already been brought to the notice of county councils for their consideration. As regards the period of employment I would refer the Deputy to the statement made in the Dáil on 11th October last by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance.
