Vol. 100 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Killarney Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is now in a position to state whether the Killarney Urban District Council has yet furnished the report, requested by his Department in March, 1942, on a proposed water supply for Killarney; and, if so, if he will state when the report was furnished, and if it is his intention to insist on having a 24-hour water supply available in Killarney.

The responsibility for providing an adequate water supply in any area rests on the local sanitary authority, not on my Department. I am, however, fully aware of the importance of improving the Killarney supply and on a number of occasions during recent years the matter has been brought to the notice of the urban district council. As already explained to the Deputy in reply to his previous question, the submission of detailed estimates for the alternative schemes under consideration, which was requested on the 19th March, 1942, is awaited. In reply to an inquiry from the Department last September, the urban council stated that nothing was done during the war years owing to the absence of the consulting engineer and to the fact that cast iron pipes could not be procured. They have since appointed another consultant whose proposals are now awaited.
