Vol. 100 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Slaughter of Calves.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the number of calves slaughtered in the first three months of this year; and whether he thinks this practice desirable in view of the long-term policy recommended both by this country and Great Britain which envisages a substantial increase in the demand for both animals and animal products.

Figures are not available in respect of slaughtering of calves for home use but the number of calves slaughtered for export in the first three months of this year was 7,004. As stated in reply to a question on the subject on 31st January last, the class of animals so slaughtered consists mainly of calves unsuitable for rearing.
