Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Teachers' Strike.

asked the Minister for Education if he will make a statement concerning the present position of the strike of national teachers in Dublin; if he can hold out any hope, at this stage, of a settlement of the strike; and if he will state whether, in the event of the teachers unconditionally resuming their employment, he will further review his most recent offer of improving salaries and conditions.

The attitude of the Government in regard to the strike of national teachers in Dublin has been stated clearly on a number of occasions, namely, that the proposals made to the national school teachers represented the utmost extent to which the existing scales could be increased having regard to the other demands upon the taxpayer. Provision had been made for a review of the position in three years. In the light of these circumstances, the only way in which the present situation can be terminated is by the teachers now on strike resuming duty and I can only express the earnest hope that they will do so at the earliest possible moment.
