Vol. 101 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Remuneration of Local Authority Officials.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that the remuneration of officers of local authorities is generally unsatisfactory and, in many cases, is not sufficient to enable the recipients to enjoy an adequate standard of living; and whether, in view of the development and extension of public services administered by local authorities, he will give immediate effect to clause 4 (i) of the Local Government (Officers) Regulations, 1943, with the object of improving the standard of remuneration and living of such officers, as well as encouraging a higher standard of efficiency.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative. In regard to the second part of the question the Deputy appears to be under a misapprehension as to the purpose of Article 4 of the regulations to which he refers. Article 4 deals with the submission of the officers' schemes by the local authorities. The officers' schemes should not contain proposals to alter the standards of remuneration or conditions of service of local officers.
