Vol. 101 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City Unemployed.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total number of unemployed in Cork City for each of the years ended 31st March, 1932 to 1946, inclusive.

As the answer contains a number of figures I propose, with the Ceann Comhairle's permission, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Following is the answer:---

The average number of persons registered for employment on the last Saturday of each month at Cork Employment Exchange in each of the years ended 31st March, 1932, to 1946, inclusive, was as follows:---

Year ended 31st March

The figures for the years ended 31st March, 1932, 1933 and 1934 are probably not comparable with those for subsequent financial years as a result of the coming into operation of the Unemployment Assistance Act, 1933, and of administrative changes. Registration is a prerequisite for receipt of unemployment assistance and, as a consequence of the Act, it seems likely that many persons signed the live register who, though unemployed, would not otherwise have done so.
