Vol. 101 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Scouring Powder.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether an export permit has been issued to the Erne Soap and Candle Works, Dublin, for the export of scouring powder.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the materials used in the manufacture of scouring powder for which an export licence is sought by the Erne Soap and Candle Works, Dublin; the quantity and value of each material used per hundredweight or other unit of production, the particular items in respect of which control is exercised, and the reasons for this control.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together. A licence to export scouring powder has not been granted to the Erne Soap and Candle Works. The question of granting one will be considered when the firm submits certain information for which it has been asked.

Information furnished to me as to the detailed composition of a proprietary product must necessarily be treated as confidential and for this reason I cannot give the information sought in regard to the scouring powder manufactured by the Erne Soap and Candle Works. I have explained to the Deputy in reply to a question in Dáil Eireann on the 6th June, that one of the constituents of this powder is soap. The export of soap is controlled because of the shortage and in order to safeguard supplies for the home market.
