Vol. 101 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that for almost 20 years considerable damage has been caused by the Ayle River, Tourmakeady, County Mayo (Mitchell estate), which floods and washes away the land; if he is further aware that the local people have complained to the Land Commission on several occasions without success; and if he will take steps to have the matter investigated and remedied immediately.

The Land Commission have not received any recent representations regarding the flooding of holdings at Tourmakeady. The Mitchell estate, to which the Deputy refers, was dealt with by the former Congested Districts Board and the holdings thereon were vested in the tenant purchasers some 40 years ago. The carrying out of a drainage scheme as envisaged in the question is not a matter for the Land Commission.

Seeing that the Land Commission have no responsibility in the matter, will the Minister say what Government Department, if any, has responsibility?

Mr. Boland

I cannot say that, but it is not the Land Commission.
