Vol. 101 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pay of Road Workers.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he will intimate to local authorities in rural areas that, having regard to the revised rates of pay proposed for agricultural workers, he will be prepared, on representations from such local authorities, to sanction increased rates of pay for road workers so as to bring their rates of pay up to not less than the standard fixed by the Agricultural Wages Board.

It would not be proper for me to issue any general directions to local authorities in the matter, which must be considered locally first. Any proposals put forward will receive careful consideration. The Deputy is no doubt aware that the fixing of remuneration is a duty of the county manager, subject to the financial control of the county council.
