Vol. 101 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing on Kenny Estate (Laoighis).

asked the Minister for Lands if he will furnish the full name and address of the contractor employed for the erection of houses on the Kenny estate, Rossdarragh, Rathdowney, Laoighis; the number of houses to be erected and the total amount of the contract; whether the contractor is bound by the fair wages clause contained in Government contracts, and, if so, why he is permitted to pay builders' labourers at the low rate of 36/- a week in the area concerned.

Mr. Michael O'Connor, Lismoylan, Ardrahan, County Galway, is the contractor engaged by the Land Commission on the erection of ten dwelling-houses and some out-offices on the Kenny estate at Rossdarragh. It is not the practice to disclose the tendered price for such competitive contracts. The contractor is bound by the usual fair wages clause and inquiries made by the Land Commission indicate that this provision is being complied with. The Deputy appears to be misinformed regarding the rate of wages paid to builders' labourers in this case.
