Vol. 102 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Financial Statistics.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of (a) 31st March, 1938, and (b) 31st March, 1946, (1) the amount of cash in the hands of the public, and (2) the total sum on deposit and current accounts with the Irish banks.

As can be seen by reference to the quarterly statistical bulletin published by the Currency Commission and the Central Bank of Ireland at the relevant dates, and reproduced in the Irish Trade Journal, the current, deposit and other accounts of the Irish banks within the State amounted to £117,357,828 in March, 1938, and to £212,745,281 in March, 1946. The total monetary circulation on these respective dates was £16,788,925 and £43,873,289. Portion of the latter figures was, of course, held as cash by the banks.
