Vol. 102 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Lime on National Stud Farm.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what quantity, if any, of agricultural lime has been used at the National Stud Farm at Tully, County Kildare, during the past two years; whether the soil service section of his Department had been used to determine the lime requirements; and, if so, what was the P H result.

The quantities of lime used at the National Stud Farm, Tully, County Kildare, were as follows:— 1944, 132 tons; 1945, 135 tons; 1946, 35 tons.

The soil service section of the Department of Agriculture was not used to determine the lime requirements of the land, as the lime was used for the specific purpose of combating worm infestation on certain paddocks before again using the lands as a stud farm.

Would I be right in saying the P H of that particular land is over 7.5 and, therefore, it is alkaline?

It is quite possible that the land is alkaline, but the lime had to be used for that particular purpose.
