Vol. 102 No. 9

Written Answer. - Military Tribunal.

asked the Minister for Defence if there is any Government regulation prohibiting the newspapers from publishing the names of the Army officers officiating at trials held before the Military Tribunal; if he will state the names and legal qualifications of these officers; and if he will state the annual salaries of these officers and the additional emoluments (if any) accruing to these officers by virtue of their appointments to these courts.

There is no Government regulation prohibiting the newspapers from publishing the names of Army officers who constitute the Special Criminal Court. The names of the officers concerned are as follows:—Colonel F. Bennett; Colonel J.V. Joyce; Colonel F. Devlin; Major C. Whelan; Major P. Tuite. None of these officers has legal qualifications. The court registrar (an Army officer) is a barrister-at-law.

The members of the court receive the pay and allowances appropriate to their ranks and each member also receives, in respect of his duties as such, additional remuneration at the rate of £450 per annum, with a car allowance of £144 per annum.
