Vol. 103 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - I.N.T.O. Meeting.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the reasons why representatives of the Irish National Teachers' Organisation were prevented by the Gárda Síochána from addressing a meeting in Dublin on 26th October, 1946.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to an incident which occurred near the corner of O'Connell Street and North Earl Street on the eve of the football final.

I am informed that between 5 and 6 p.m. a few members of the I.N.T.O commenced to broadcast speeches and music from an amplifier in an upstairs window of 32 Lower O'Connell Street. A crowd collected and traffic, which was heavy at the time, was obstructed. The Gárda superintendent for the district entered the room from which the broadcast was being made, pointed out that obstruction was being caused, and requested that the broadcast should be discontinued. The broadcasters complied with this request.
