Vol. 103 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Sub-Post Offices.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if the proposed post office for Crossard, Ballyhaunis, has yet been opened; if so, if he will state who has been appointed to the position of sub-postmaster, and what are his qualifications; further, if he will state the number of applications received for this position, and whether any of the applicants had previous experience of post office administration; and also what townlands are served by this post office, and whether it will be situated in the most convenient centre.

The new sub-post office at Tooreen-Crossard, Ballyhaunis, was opened on the 26th September last. Mrs. Galvin, who was the most suitable of five candidates for the vacancy, was appointed sub-postmistress. None of the candidates had previous experience of post office work. The office is centrally situated in the village of Tooreen and it facilitates residents in Tooreen, Crossard, Crossabeg, Coolnaha, Cloongoonagh, Cartron North, Shanwalla, etc.

Could the Minister say what is the salary for doing all that?

About £36.

Still, there were seven applicants for the position.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state when his Department propose to fill the vacancy in Kilkelly sub-post office; the number of applications received for this position; and if any of the applicants has had previous knowledge of post office administration.

I have just received a report in this case. There are eight candidates, three of them with previous experience of sub-post office work. It is anticipated that it will be possible to make an appointment in the near future.

Which of them has previous experience of the Fianna Fáil club in Kilkelly?

If the chorus on my right would cease, we would get through the business much more quickly.

It would be a shame not to do justice to the Fianna Fáil clubs. Senator Quirke says they are in a bad way.
