Vol. 103 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Timber for Fuel.

asked the Minister for Lands if, in view of the shortage of suitable supplies of turf owing to the very bad summer weather, and of the consequent danger of a scarcity of fuel for the winter months, he will arrange that timber will be made available, from State and private forests, to meet the requirements of the people; and that such fuel will be sold at a reasonable price.

After more than six years of cutting under war or post-war conditions the stocks of firewood in the State forests have been reduced to a very low level. Sales of firewood timber in the form of blocks, logs, brushwood, etc., are being made continually and will be continued and accelerated as much as possible during the winter.

I have no power to compel owners of private forests either to dispose of timber for firewood or to sell it below the present maximum legal prices.
