Vol. 103 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allocation of Maize.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will reconsider his decision in relation to the allocation of maize to millers who have facilities for maize milling; if he will state whether, if he is not prepared to permit these millers to share in the distribution of the maize already in the country, he is prepared to give due consideration to the claims of such private millers in the allocation of future maize imports.

I am not prepared to alter the arrangements for the distribution of maize which I indicated to the Deputy in reply to a previous question of his last week. As soon as supply conditions permit, however, statutory restrictions on the distribution of maize to individual applicants will be removed.

Is the Minister aware that permits have been granted to co-operative societies in various parts of the country, and that their machinery for milling this maize is entirely inadequate, while, at the same time, old established millers who, prior to the emergency, were engaged in the milling business, have applied for similar permits, and have been refused?

I do not think that any old established millers are left out.
