Vol. 103 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Castleboyne Lands (Mayo).

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that congestion exists in the townlands of Corroughadooey and Prospect, Crossboyne, County Mayo, that there are several untenanted holdings with an area totalling approximately 50 acres in this locality, as well as a large farm the property of Mr. Mellett, Prospect; and if he will acquire these lands immediately for the relief of the uneconomic landholders in the area.

Mr. Boland

Acute congestion in the townland of Curraghadooey has already been alleviated as far as possible and no undue congestion remains in that townland. There is no townland named Prospect in this district but I presume the Deputy is referring to the town land of Gortanierin on which the residence known as Prospect House, is situated. Acute congestion does not exist in that townland.

The Land Commission resumed portion of the holding of Mr. Joseph Mellett last year and have no proceedings for the resumption of the balance of his lands. Resumption proceedings have been initiated in respect of the holding of Mr. Michael Hughes in the townland of Gortanierin.

I can assure the Minister that there is congestion in this area. In the case of one family, the man is trying to make a living on one acre.

Has the Deputy a question to ask?

That is the question I have to ask.

I understood the Deputy was making a statement.
