Vol. 103 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - United Nations' Organisation—Application for Admission.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state the procedure adopted by the Government in making application to have Ireland admitted to membership of the United Nations' Organisation; if he will place copies of any correspondence in the matter before the Oireachtas; if he will make a statement outlining to the Dáil the proceedings in relation to the application which have taken place at any body or committee forming part of the United Nations' Organisation machinery; and if he will state what is the present position, and the Government's intention in the matter.

The information required by the Deputy is contained in the White Paper entitled "Papers Relating to Ireland's Application for Admission to the United Nations' Organisation", which was presented to the Dáil on the 6th November. The present position is that the United Nations' Assembly has asked the security council to reconsider its decision on our and other applications. I do not think there is any further statement I can usefully make on the subject at this stage.
