asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of civil servants, serving in the Department of Education, on each of the following dates: 1st April, 1924; 1st April, 1929; 1st April, 1934; 1st April, 1939; and 1st April, 1946.

The numbers on the dates mentioned were as follows:—

In connection with the 1st April, 1924, it must be noted that on that date technical instruction and the institutions of science and art were administered by the Minister for Agriculture and reformatory and industrial schools by the Minister for Finance. The number of civil servants in these three branches on the date in question amounted to 204.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the total cost of pay and allowances, to civil servants in the Department of Education, for each of the following years: 1924-25; 1929-30; 1934-35; and 1939-40; and also the estimated cost for the year 1946-47.

The total cost of pay and allowances for the years in question is as follows:—

£249,549 (estimated)

In connection with 1924-25 it must be noted that in that year technical instruction and the institutions of science and art were administered by the Minister for Agriculture and reformatory and industrial schools by the Minister for Finance. The total cost of pay and allowances to civil servants in these three services in 1924-25 amounted to £66,283.
