Vol. 104 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Food and Clothing Prices.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the reduced purchasing power of money in Ireland, and the consequent high costs of the goods now required to maintain a family in reasonable comfort, he will make a statement on the position; and if he will state whether the Government will introduce legislation to keep the prices of food and clothing within the limits of the wages and salaries paid to citizens.

I propose to deal with the matters referred to in the Deputy's question to-morrow during the discussions on the motions on the Order Paper.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the hardship caused to the community by the continuing high cost of essential commodities such as food and clothing; if his Department propose to inquire into the prices charged for essential goods, with a view to a reduction in the cost of living; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware that the price of essential commodities such as food and clothing has risen since 1939. All prices are under continuous review in my Department. Time is being given for a full and complete discussion on the whole position in the Dáil.
