Vol. 104 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Taxation of Lorries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that owners of lorries, who have taxed their vehicles recently and forwarded ration cards to his Department, have been requested to furnish the Department with two photographs giving a side view and back view of the vehicles; and if he will give the reasons for such requirements.

Numerous vehicle owners have endeavoured to obtain, for private motor vehicles, the higher rate of petrol allowances applicable to commercial goods vehicles by changing the taxation of the private vehicles to the commercial goods class without altering the vehicles.

The production of photographs has been necessary to ensure that petrol allowances appropriate to commercial goods vehicles are granted only in genuine cases where private motor vehicles have been structurally changed to commercial goods vehicles.

Photographs are called for only where a currently registered commercial goods vehicle was previously registered as a private motor vehicle. This procedure has been in operation since 1941.
