Vol. 104 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Imprisonment of Archbishop.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, in connection with the resolution passed by Dáil Éireann on 21st November, 1946, relating to the imprisonment of Monsignor Stepinac, Archbishop of Zagreb and Primate of Croatia, he will state what steps have been taken to bring the terms of the resolution to the notice of other countries; further, if he will state whether any other action has been taken in this matter, and if so, the nature of such action.

Representations in accordance with the resolution have been made to the Governments of all States with which we are in diplomatic relations. Further action in the sense of the resolution is being taken as opportunity offers, but it will depend upon the circumstances whether I am able to make any statement about such action in the Dáil. I will not do so if I think it would prejudice the attainment of the objects in view.

Can the Minister say whether he has any information at the moment as to the present situation in regard to Monsignor Stepinac's incarceration or does he deem it expedient not to dwell on that matter in public now?

I think it is as well to leave it alone.
