asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the free milk scheme is not in operation in Lucan; if he will state the reason for this; and whether, if the reason concerns the price payable for the milk, he will take steps to have the scheme put into operation.

I am aware that the free milk scheme has not been in operation in the Lucan area for some months. I should mention, however, that the first occasion on which my attention was drawn to this situation was when the Deputy wrote to me on the 10th December last. He was informed that while the question had not come before my Department it was understood that the local authority had experienced considerable difficulty in obtaining tenders for the supply of milk in Lucan and that every effort was being made to obtain such supplies. I am informed that arrangements have now been made for the issue to persons eligible under the scheme of dried milk powder pending the outcome of further efforts to secure supplies of liquid milk.
I am not aware that the question of price entered into the cessation of the scheme; the position, I am informed by the local authority, is that it has not been possible to obtain any tender for the supply of milk since the former contractor ceased business.
Will the Minister say whether tenders for milk for Lucan must be inside the five home milk counties?
I think so. I am not sure.
Will the Minister find out and will he see whether or not he might be able to get contractors from outside these counties?
As a general principle they must be drawn from the five home counties.
Is the Minister aware that there is a great scarcity of milk in Dublin at the present time and the school milk is being stopped?
I am aware that owing to unfavourable weather conditions there is a scarcity of milk all over the country. I cannot supply it; neither can the Deputy.
