Vol. 104 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of Longford Rivers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that a drainage scheme, with an estimate of cost, for the Camlin, Fallen and Ballyminion rivers, was submitted some years ago by the Longford County Surveyor to the Office of Public Works; if he will state whether he has examined this plan, and if he proposes to adopt it, thereby giving immediate relief to those farmers in County Longford whose lands are subject to flooding by these rivers; and also, if he is aware that the engineer who prepared the plan is available to supervise the carrying out of the necessary works.

The Commissioners of Public Works have no record of the receipt from the Longford County Council or their surveyor of a drainage scheme, with estimate of cost, for the rivers referred to.

In any event, arterial drainage works would be undertaken by the commissioners only in accordance with the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. The position regarding a scheme for the Longford catchment area is as indicated in the reply given by me on the 28th January to a question by the Deputy on the same subject.
