Vol. 104 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coal Supply from Arigna.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether he is aware: (1) that a large number of coal workers are idle in the Arigna district; (2) that at least 100 tons of coal daily are being lost to industry as a result; (3) that this trouble is due to the inadequate supply of railway wagons; and if he will take immediate steps to see that the necessary wagons are supplied to enable the fullest possible output to be maintained steadily.

I am aware that the output of Arigna mines has been limited by a number of factors of which a temporary shortage of railway wagons during the sugar production season was one. It is anticipated that wagons will be released almost immediately from the haulage of beet and sugar and steps have already been taken to ensure that the best transport facilities possible will be provided for carriage of coal from the Arigna district.

Is it the intention of the Minister to stimulate to the greatest possible extent the output of coal from Arigna in present circumstances?

Certainly.
