Vol. 104 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Circuit Court at Swinford.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the serious inconvenience caused to the people of the Swinford district, County Mayo, as a result of the discontinuance of sittings of the Circuit Court at Swinford; if he is further aware that some people, engaged in litigation from the area, have to travel to Castlebar, involving in some instances a journey of 32 miles; and if he will consider arranging for the resumption of sittings at Swinford, as had been the practice for over 70 years prior to 1922.

The places at which sittings of the Circuit Court are held are fixed by rules of court, not by the Minister for Justice. Swinford is not, and never was, among the places so fixed. I may, perhaps, mention that under the new judicature system established by the Courts of Justice Act, 1924, much of the business of the former County Court is now transacted in the District Court and sittings of the latter court are held in Swinford.
