Vol. 104 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order:— Nos. 5, 6 and 7 (under No. 7, Votes 74 and 75) and No. 8. If public business should finish before the adjournment, Private Deputies' Business will be taken, the motion under discussion being Motion No. 2, on List 12.

Will the Tánaiste say how many days it is intended to sit this week?

Four days.

Is there business enough for four days?

If there should not be business, we will not sit for four days.

Will the Tánaiste say if the House will sit next week?

It will not.

I understood that, as the Government had not enough business for a four-day sitting, we were to continue discussion of the motions that are on List 12 in the names of Private Deputies.

I do not know how business will progress, but we can examine the situation at any time. I do not think that we will sit on the fourth day solely for the purpose of taking Private Deputies' Business.

Is it not a fact that we undertook to sit for four days on the grounds that, on the fourth day, there will be no possibility of anybody travelling home by train?

There will be no disposition to curtail discussion of Private Deputies' Business at this time because, as Deputies know, we are approaching the season during which Private Deputies' motions are not ordinarily discussed. It has been the practice to give more time for the discussion of Private Deputies' Business at this stage of the session than at other periods of the year.

I understood the arrangement was that we were to sit four days and that Government business would be wiped out as far as possible in view of the fact that we are not sitting next week. I also understood that the remainder of the period in this week would be given for the purpose of dealing with motions in the names of Private Deputies.

There will be additional time for Private Deputies' motions.

I beg to give notice that I intend to raise the subject matter of question No. 10 on the adjournment this evening.

With Deputy Flanangan's permission?

His permission is not necessary. The Deputy can raise any matter.

I have got his permission.

Apart from that, it would not be necessary. I might say that, on the last occasion on which the House met, Deputy Corish was to raise a question on the adjournment and did not raise it. That may have to be considered. I will see Deputy cogan later about it.

As we are on that, perhaps I might give notice on behalf of Deputy MacEoin that he would probably like to raise on the adjournment on Thursday the subject matter of question No. 28.

The Chair cannot give any undertaking about that, but it can be considered.

No, but as we were talking about these matters I thought I might mention it.
