Vol. 104 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Location of Birr Dispensary.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that it is proposed to locate the new dispensary at Birr in an inconvenient position for the poor of the town, as they will have to walk three-quarters of a mile from the town to the dispensary; and if he will make representations to the local authority to secure the selection of a more central site.

I understand that the Offaly County Council have received notice to vacate the existing dispensary premises, which are not owned by them, and are providing alternative dispensary accommodation at the old workhouse buildings, portion of which is being adapted for the purpose. It appears that the new premises are the most suitable now available and that the general arrangements and equipment will be superior to those in the former dispensary. While the new dispensary will be situated on the outskirts of the town, its location should not cause undue inconvenience to persons who will attend it. In these circumstances it is not proposed to ask the local authority to reconsider the arrangement.

In view of the fact that the proposed dispensary is at least three-quarters of a mile from the centre of the town, would the Minister request the local authority to ensure that this will be only a temporary measure and also request the local authority to erect a dispensary residence for the dispensary doctor more convenient to the centre of the town of Birr? Such an arrangement would be much better in the interests of the ratepayers and in the interests of economy.

I have to assume that the local authority is very anxious to suit the residents of the town so far as it can.
