Vol. 104 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Increased Salaries.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the cause of the delay in the payment of the increased salaries granted to national teachers, with effect from 31st October, 1946; and if he will state as from what date these increased salaries will be paid.

There has been no avoidable delay in my Department in arranging for payment to national teachers of the new scales of salary. It is a task of very considerable magnitude to arrange for the transfer of nearly 13,000 teachers (at different points of their respective scales) from the former rates to the new rates of pay, and for the adjustment of payments already made since the 31st October, 1946, and every effort is being made to complete the process as expeditiously as possible. I am hoping that it will be feasible to pay salaries according to the new scales in the course of the coming month.
