Vol. 104 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Water Supply.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Local Government if he is aware that the water supply service in Wexford town has been unsatisfactory for a considerable time; that residents in certain areas in the town are left without water for eight and nine hours during the day; that, despite representations by local public representatives over the past two years, no, improvement has been made; if he will get a report from the Wexford Corporation on the situation; and if he will ascertain from them what steps they propose to take to bring about an immediate improvement.

I am aware that the water supply in the Borough of Wexford is not satisfactory by reason of the fact that the existing trunk main is inefficient. A tender for relaying the main has been accepted and the contractors are at present awaiting the delivery of the necessary pipes. Areas in the borough supplied by gravitation cannot at present be served simultaneously. To meet this difficulty the manager, in consultation with the borough council, decided last month on a zoning system intended to give a supply to the various sections of the borough in turn.

Mr. Corish

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say if the Department of Local Government can do anything to facilitate the Wexford Corporation in procuring the necessary pipes?

I understand that cast iron pipes are being allocated on priorities and a period of six months must elapse. The contract for this work was made last November.
