Vol. 104 No. 13

Written Answers. - Turf Deliveries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, in respect of 1946, the total quantity of turf delivered to: (a) Dublin City; (b) Cork City; (c) Limerick City; (d) Waterford City, and (e) the remainder of the non-turf area.

Limerick City is in the scheduled turf area and I have no information in regard to the quantity of turf delivered there in 1946. The quantity of turf consigned through Fuel Importers (Éire), Limited, to the Dublin, Cork and Waterford areas and to the remainder of the non-turf area in 1946 was as follows:—Dublin, 334,000 tons; Cork, 53,000 tons; Waterford, 33,500 tons; remainder of the non-turf area, 99,000 tons.

In addition, about 118,000 tons of turf were delivered in 1946 to merchants, industrial firms, etc., in the non-turf area under turf movement licences. Of this turf, over 100,000 tons came to the Dublin area and about 12,000 and 2,000 tons to the Cork and Waterford areas respectively.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, in respect of 1946, the quantity of turf transported from the turf to the non-turf areas by: (a) rail; (b) canal; (c) road mechanically-propelled vehicles; (d) other forms of road transport; and the cost of transport in each case, as expressed in terms of ton miles.

So far as concerns turf brought into the non-turf area by Fuel Importers (Éire), Limited, the quantities moved by (a) rail, (b) canal, (c) road mechanically-propelled vehicles, and (d) other forms of road transport in 1946 were as follows:—(a) 286,000 tons; (b) 11,000 tons; (c) 222,500 tons; (d) nil.

No corresponding information is available in my Department in respect of turf consigned otherwise than to Fuel Importers (Éire), Limited.

The cost of transport is not available on a ton mile basis.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state, in respect of 1946, the number of firms or persons engaged in the transport of turf to the non-turf areas, distinguishing between public transport companies and private hauliers, the number of vehicles operated in relation to this work by (a) public transport companies, and (b) private hauliers, and the ton miles run in each case.

The information asked for by the Deputy is not available in my Department.
