Vol. 104 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turbary Valuations.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, in respect of each county council, the number of cases reported to the Valuation Office of persons who cut and sold turf during each of the years 1945 and 1946 so that the Valuation Office might consider the raising of valuations.

It is not usual for county councils when requesting revision of turbary valuations to distinguish between cases where turf is cut and sold and cases of letting for a rent or other valuable consideration; the normal request is for revision of the valuation without indicating the precise source of the profits. In 1945-46 no case was reported to the Valuation Office by a county council in which it was stated that the person concerned cut and sold turf; in 1946-47 there were 203 such cases, whereof 183 were from Westmeath, 15 from Mayo, two from Roscommon and Waterford and one from Wexford.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state, in respect of each county council area, the total number of cases in which inquiries have been made by the Valuation Office in relation to the raising of the valuation of a holding because of turf sold therefrom in each of the years 1945 and 1946.

The numbers of cases in which inquiries were made by the Valuation Office in 1945-46 in relation to the raising of turbary valuations were: Tipperary (N.R.) 27, Monaghan 24, Wicklow 4, Mayo 3, and 1 each in Kerry, Kildare, Limerick, Roscommon, Sligo and Westmeath.

In 1946-47 the numbers were: Carlow 2, Cavan 168, Clare 138, Cork 214, Donegal 65, Dublin 4, Galway 191, Kerry 157, Kildare 46, Laoighis 100, Leitrim 23, Limerick 34, Longford 64, Louth 35, Mayo 465, Meath 8, Monaghan 26, Offaly 59, Roscommon 398, Sligo 79, Tipperary (N.R.) 68, Tipperary (S.R.) 32, Waterford 6, Westmeath 324, Wexford 3 and Wicklow 61.

Mr. Morrissey

It is no wonder we have got no turf.

The campaign is on but not the turf-cutting campaign.

It is about time the Deputy got interested in turf.

I have been interested in it for a long time.
