Vol. 105 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Portarlington Sewerage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the present position regarding the proposed sewerage scheme for Portarlington; if he is aware of the complaints of the townspeople regarding the delay in providing this scheme; and if he will indicate when tenders will be invited.

The provision of a sewerage scheme at Portarlington was approved at the end of the year 1939 and work on the general contract has been completed. Grants amounting to £6,000 have been allocated and loans of £15,850 have been obtained from the Local Loans Fund. During the emergency it was impossible to obtain delivery of pumping plant, without which the scheme as approved originally cannot be put fully into operation. As the position regarding such plant is still difficult it has been found necessary to amend the original pumping proposals by substituting a type of plant which may be more readily available. The invitation of tenders on the basis of the revised proposals was approved on the 1st instant.

Some minor works and house connections also require to be executed; a decision in regard to these was deferred pending the approval of the pumping scheme. The local authority has been informed that their proposals in regard to these matters are in order.
