Vol. 105 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Council Workers' Bread Ration.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the reason for the rejection of a number of applications for an extra bread ration made by foremen or gangers, employed at road work, by the Cork County Council, whose hours of work, nature of work, and inability to have a midday meal at home are similar to members of their gangs whose applications have been granted; and if he will examine all such cases further.

I would refer the Deputy to the answer given to a similar question on March 20th.

Would the Minister not give some further information on this matter? It is a very important one.

The reply I gave on March 20th was that gangers employed on road work in circumstances similar to ordinary road workers are entitled to a supplementary allowance.

Why were their applications refused? Did they not make that fact clear?

They were refused because the applications made by them appeared to convey the idea that their duties were mainly supervisory. Where they are supervisory, no supplementary allowance is granted, but where they are working there is an allowance.

I assure the Minister that in County Cork there is none other than a working ganger.
