Vol. 105 No. 5

Written Answers. - Administration Costs.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the total cost of administering: (a) the Old Age Pensions Acts; (b) the Widows' and Orphans' Pensions Acts; (c) the Unemployment Insurance Acts; (d) the Unemployment Assistance Acts; and (e) the Children's Allowances Acts; and if he will indicate, in each case, the several items of expense making up the total, in respect of the last year for which complete figures are available.

Owing to pressure of work arising out of the formation of the Department of Social Welfare, I regret that it would not be possible to supply the information now without considerable dislocation of other urgent work. If the Deputy will repeat the question not earlier than 31st proximo, I hope to be in a position to furnish a detailed reply. It will be understood, however, that by reason of the fact that certain of the services are not self-contained, e.g., some groups of officials deal with more than one service, the division of cost as between the services must, in certain cases, be on an estimated, and not on a firm, basis.
