asked the Minister for Education if he will state, for each of the past five years, (a) the total number of primary schools; (b) the total number of teachers employed in such schools, distinguishing between (i) lay men teachers, (ii) lay women teachers and (iii) members of religious orders; (c) the number of pupils on the school rolls; and (d) the average number of pupils in attendance at school daily.

A statement has been prepared for the Deputy's information which shows for each of the past five school years the total number of primary schools. A statement has also been prepared which shows for the four years ended 30th June, 1942, 30th June, 1943, 30th June, 1944, and 30th June, 1945 the

(1) average number of pupils on rolls,

(2) average number of pupils in daily attendance.

Similar information in respect of the year ended 30th June, 1946, is being compiled at present as well as the information required by the Deputy regarding the total number of teachers employed. These statistics will be made available for the Deputy at an early date.

Following are the statements:—

The following table shows the number of primary schools in operation on the last day of each school year during the five years commenced on the 1st July, 1941, and ended on 30th June, 1946:—

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in respect of each of the last five years: (a) the number of new pupils enrolled in the primary schools, and (b) the number who ceased attending school; further in respect of each such period, the number of pupils on roll, distinguishing between boys and girls, whose ages (i) exceeded 14 years but did not exceed 15 years; (ii) exceeded 15 years but did not exceed 16 years, and (iii) exceeded 16 years.

Particulars of new enrolments are not supplied by managers or teachers on the returns furnished annually and the only figures available are those showing the number of pupils on rolls in the infant classes as given in the Annual Report of my Department published by the Stationery Office.

Figures showing, over a period of five years, the number of pupils who have ceased to attend school and the number of boys and girls on rolls over 14 years of age would take a considerable time to prepare. I will look into the matter again and will communicate with the Deputy later.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in respect of the latest date for which information is available: (a) the total number of pupils on roll in each primary school in Dublin County Borough; and (b) the total number of teachers in each such school.

This information is being prepared at present and I will arrange to have it supplied to the Deputy as soon as possible.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in respect of the latest date for which information is available: (a) the total number of pupils on roll in each primary school in Cork County Borough; and (b) the total number of teachers in each such school.
