Vol. 105 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pearse Street (Dublin) Sorting Office.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is now in a position to indicate his intentions regarding the erection of a new central sorting and delivery office at Pearse Street, Dublin, with particular reference to: (a) when it is proposed to commence the constructional work; and (b) when it is hoped that the new building will be available.

I regard the scheme for the erection of a new central sorting and delivery office at Pearse Street as one of considerable importance and I am anxious to see it carried to completion as soon as possible.

Staffing and traffic conditions, however, have so altered in recent years that much of the preliminary work on the scheme has had to be revised and I regret that I am not in a position at present to estimate when actual building operations will begin or what will be their duration. The Deputy is fully aware of all the difficulties which have arisen during the emergency period in regard to building materials and supplies generally.

A marvellous plan!

Arising out of the Minister's reply to the question, will the Minister state how the reply which he has now just given compares with the reply given to a similar question 15 years ago?

The Deputy is quite at liberty to make his own comparisons.
