Vol. 105 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Bacon Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been drawn to the position concerning the bacon trade dislocation in Dublin; if he will make inquiries as to the cause of the discontinuance by bacon curers of supplies to the wholesale trade; if he is aware that, as a result of this stoppage of supplies, retailers are meeting with great difficulty in providing even a limited supply of bacon to their customers; and if he will make a statement on the position.

I am aware that one firm of bacon curers refused to continue the supply of bacon to their customers and that other firms have issued circulars to their customers intimating an intention to discontinue supply. Directions for Sale have been issued to these firms by the Pigs and Bacon Commission under Emergency Powers (No. 353) Order, 1945, and proceedings arising out of the Directions for Sale issued to these firms are pending before the High Court. In the circumstances, I do not propose to make any statement on the position.
