Vol. 106 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Potato Supply in Connemara.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that, in many places in Connemara, supplies of eating potatoes are running out, thereby accentuating the hardship caused by the inadequacy of the flour ration; and if he will direct his Department to organise the supply and distribution of eating potatoes, at a reasonable price, for this area.

I am aware that stocks of table potatoes in Connemara are lower than is usual at this season of the year, notwithstanding the satisfactory yields obtained from the potato crop there last season. This is due principally to lack of fodder caused by the severe weather conditions of recent months and the consequent feeding of potatoes to live stock to a greater extent than in normal seasons. Reports, however, indicate that at present there is no serious shortage of available supplies and that the position, generally, is not one that need give rise to anxiety.
