Vol. 106 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wexford Foundries.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the serious position of the foundries in Wexford, owing to the lack of coke; whether, in view of the vital importance, this year, of the work of providing replacement parts for agricultural implements and machinery, he will take immediate steps to make sufficient fuel available to these foundries to enable them to continue working at full capacity; and if he will ensure this industry a priority in future allocations of coke.

Imports of coke from Great Britain for distribution to foundries ceased early this year. Since then every effort has been, and continues to be, made to secure further supplies from this source. Efforts are also being made to obtain foundry coke from America and a small parcel is expected to arrive shortly. While everything is being done to secure further quantities from the United States, I am not in a position to give an assurance that sufficient supplies will be forthcoming to meet the full requirements of the foundries and allied industries.

Is the Minister aware that spare parts for ploughs and other farm implements are on the point of being exhausted? I am sure the Minister is aware that spare parts cannot be found for ploughs and other farm machinery. That means that land will be left derelict, which would be cultivated if parts for implements were available. Is it not possible to do something to relieve the situation?

Everything possible is being done to get foundry coke.

We may take it then that the Minister has failed in his job.

I have not failed yet.

Mr. Corish

Can the Minister say in respect of the consignment coming from America what is the allocation to be given to Wexford foundries and, further, can he say what is the prospect of getting further supplies of foundry coke from America?

From the quantity that is now en route a supply will be made available for Wexford foundries. I think there is a reasonable prospect of getting further supplies.

Mr. Corish

Could the Minister say what is the allocation for Wexford foundries because this is most important?

I would require notice of that.

Mr. Corish

Could the Minister say what is the total quantity coming from America?

I would require notice of that also. It is a couple of hundred tons approximately. I shall tell the Deputy when it arrives.
