Vol. 106 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Building Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the severe damage done to many farmhouses by reason of the exceptionally hard weather last winter, he will take steps to increase the grants for the erection and reconstruction of farmhouses, and make these grants available to farmers with valuations exceeding £25.

I am not aware that farmhouses suffered more severely than houses in cities and towns or other forms of property by reason of the weather last winter and I do not propose that the grants for the erection and reconstruction of farmhouses should be increased or extended for the reason suggested by the Deputy. I may say the grants referred to by the Deputy are available virtually only in rural areas.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the increased cost of labour and building materials, he will consider a corresponding increase in the grants for the erection and reconstruction of dwelling-houses and farm buildings.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to Deputies Ua Maolchatha and Cafferky on the 23rd October last. As I indicated, as soon as I am satisfied that the supply position warrants, consideration will be given to the question of affording assistance to private persons and public utility societies for the provision of houses. At the present time all the supplies available for house-building are being used to the fullest extent possible.
